Homeschooling Illegal?

A firend of mine showed me this article today: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/07/MNJDVF0F1.DTL

I'd love to hear what people have to say about this (Vanessa, Montse, your two bits? if mom gets brave enough and learns how to comment?).

I'll post my two bits tomorrow when I get a chance, but I thought I'd go ahead and post the article for folks to read.

Oh yeah, this has been making the rounds on the homeschool e-mail group I belong to. What's gotten homeschoolers all in a huff is that the original case was a child welfare case for something else but the judge has turned it into a child neglect case because of homeschooling. Every state has different laws so it'll be interesting to see how the courts in California deal with this, and then how it will translate to other states.

In Nevada it was made a state law last year that parents only have to notify the school district one time that they are going to homeschool. We then get a letter saying we are good to go for the next 12 years. I think Nevada is one of the most lenient states for homeschooling laws - which isn't necessarily a good thing for those few who don't really teach their kids anything, there isn't any accountability.

As far as having to be a certified teacher - we didn't have to be certified to be mothers which is a much bigger job in my opinion.

I will homeschool my children if I want to. That's not the government's place. This ticks me off! I TA a class of Elementary Education students and I can tell you, I do NOT want these girls teaching my children! The school systems are so lax.
